From a proud Brazilian working class family, Marcela landed in Pittsburgh in 2012. One year later, she found a community of doulas who embraced her with empathy and kindness. Empowered by this community, Marcela also became a doula, childbirth educator and a lactation counselor. Inspired by the philosophy of Penny Simkin and a new sense of social justice in the maternal world, Marcela has been working with the community of Latinx, Portuguese and Spanish speaking families in Pittsburgh during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.
Dreaming of a world without any kind of borders between people, Marcela hopes to educate and build a community that can come together in solidarity when needed and also to have fun and enjoy life to the fullest. Marcela’s project won the Big Idea Challenge last year for Women’s Health Activist Movement.
